1. Introducing salt coffee

Salt coffee represents the spirit of Vietnamese cuisine, blending traditional coffee and 21st century creativity. Although no one really knows the origin of salt coffee, there is information that salt coffee originated from the ancient capital of Hue, salt coffee is made from Robusta coffee beans with a little salt, easily reminiscent of the enchanting salty caramel.

When mixed together, the saltiness accentuates the richness of the coffee, while softening the bitterness and enhancing the sweetness and creaminess of the milk. Served in layers, with condensed milk at the bottom, coffee in the middle and cream on top, Vietnamese salted coffee is a unique culinary adventure.

2. Origin and characteristics

Salted coffee is coffee that has had a certain amount of salt added to it without significantly changing the overall flavor of the coffee. Instead, the salt will neutralize the bitterness and contribute to enhancing the flavor of the drink.

In other words, instead of adding sugar or milk to your coffee, using salt will help:
- Reduce the bitterness of coffee beans: The saltiness of salt can inhibit the bitterness and sourness of coffee, so when drinking coffee you will feel less bitter and create a more delicious feeling when drinking.
- Enhances the flavor: The presence of salt in coffee will help release sodium ions, thereby awakening the special flavor in coffee. This helps you feel more flavors when drinking coffee.

Inspired by the special flavor of salt from Hue, salt coffee has appeared in many cafes and restaurants in big cities like Saigon and Hanoi. It is not too difficult for you to make a cup of salt coffee at home.

3. How to make salt coffee
To exploit the flavor of salted coffee, you should only use roasted coffee instead of instant coffee (pre-brewed) with very simple steps.
First, you put the roasted coffee beans into the coffee grinder to grind them finely. Then, you mix the coffee powder with a moderate amount of salt before putting it into the coffee filter with boiling water.
The extracted coffee liquid has the salty taste of salt mixed with the bitter and slightly sour taste of coffee beans.
When enjoying, you can add milk or sugar depending on your preference.

Note:
- Mix coffee powder and salt thoroughly before brewing.
- You should rinse the coffee filter with boiling water before using. In addition, you should also choose a good quality aluminum filter because the material of the filter can affect the flavor of the coffee after brewing.
- Use sea salt instead of refined salt for a rich flavor.
