History of Co To Island

Co To, whose ancient name is Chang Son (Chang Mountain), has long been a place of residence for fishing boats from the Northeast, but has not yet become a settled place because it has always been harassed by Chinese pirates. At the beginning of the Nguyen Dynasty, some Chinese fishermen captured pirates and asked to immigrate and live there.

In 1832, Nguyen Cong Tru, as the Governor of Hai An (Hai Duong - An Quang), asked the court to establish villages and assign administrators. The first village here was named Huong Hoa by Nguyen Cong Tru. Shortly after, the Nguyen Dynasty collected taxes and established Huong Hoa garrison to guard against pirates. The population gradually increased, all of whom were originally from many ethnic minorities in the coastal areas of Guangdong, Fujian and Hainan Island who had drifted here.

On October 16, 2013, Co To officially had national grid electricity after completing the project to bring electricity to the island.

When should I go to Co To?

If you want to swim in the sea, the best time to go to Co To is from March to May every year. At this time, the weather has gradually warmed up, you can swim in the sea and the sea is quite calm.

From June to August every year, it is a bit of a luck-or-bad thing because you may encounter rough seas that prevent the boat from going to the island or returning to the mainland. If you go during this time, pay attention to the weather forecast.

Around the end of September and October, the weather in the North gradually changes to autumn, the climate is cool, so if you go, it will probably just be for sightseeing.

Directions to Co To

If you go from Hanoi, you can take the bus to Cua Ong, Van Don, then get off at Van Don intersection and continue to take bus number 01 (Bai Chay - Van Don) to Van Don Post Office, from here it is about 1km more to Cai Rong port, you can choose to take a motorbike taxi or walk.

When traveling to Co To, you have many options for means of transport to explore the island. If you are a sports enthusiast, you can rent a bicycle. Otherwise, you can use a motorbike, rent a car or rent an electric car to be environmentally friendly.

As one of the hottest tourist destinations in the North every summer, Co To has no shortage of hotel, motel and even homestay services. When all these services are fully booked, many families living on the island are willing to use part of their living space to support tourists. This is to reassure you about the accommodation services here, but if you book early, you will have more options.
